One vital change you should make to your LinkedIn profile right now

LinkedIn is a constantly changing platform

Throughout this year LinkedIn has been making many tweaks and changes to the platform. Some of these have been really useful. Others have made using LinkedIn rather more difficult.

It’s hard for everyone to keep on top of these changes. Typically, LinkedIn leaves you to discover them and work out the implications yourself.

One of the most important changes is to the profile section

How do you persuade people to find out more about you on LinkedIn

Your LinkedIn profile is headed up by your summary section. Traditionally, this has been a great place to tell visitors to your profile page all about you, your services and your company. It’s the first place where people can see why they should connect with you and engage with you.

However, this has now changed. LinkedIn now only show the first two lines of your summary to visitors to your profile page. They have to click on the summary to see more. Telling people about yourself has suddenly become a lot more difficult.

Here’s how to deal with this challenge

Move the contents of your summary into your experience section. People who scroll down can read this without having to click. But you still need to get people interested in you and your services at the top of the page.

The answer is to use a case study in the summary section. If you create a results-focussed case study, people are much more likely to want to click through to read more.

The first two lines now act as a headline. So your first sentence should read something like:

“How I helped one company increase enquiries by 30%”

or

“Here’s how I created a 21% increase I footfall for one local restaurant”

Because you are being specific and focussing on the results, people are intrigued. If they are relevant prospects they will click through to find out more. The rest of your case study can give the basic details on how you helped the client and invite people to connect with you to find out more.

Make sure you make this change to your profile today

It could make a big difference to the effectiveness of your profile. In addition, it will also help you develop some powerful sales collateral if you don’t already have a case study!
